    Supply & Products

Yes — Buchanans of Yorkshire handles everything from supply through to professional fitting. You don't need to source or transport doors yourself. We order direct from the manufacturer and bring everything to your property.

Yes! Many of our ranges come factory-finished — meaning they arrive painted and ready to hang with no decorating required. This is ideal if you want a flawless, consistent finish without the hassle of painting. Look for 'Pre-finished: Yes' on any door's detail page.

Guarantees vary by door type and manufacturer. Many wood veneer and premium ranges carry a 10-year manufacturer guarantee. Factory-painted doors typically carry a 5-year finish guarantee. Primed doors carry a 3–5 year guarantee on the substrate. All guarantees are passed directly to you.

Most UK homes take a door 1,981mm high (6ft 6in) and 35mm thick, in one of a handful of standard widths — 610mm, 686mm, 762mm and 838mm are the common ones, with narrower sizes for cupboards and airing cupboards. Older properties are often imperial rather than metric, and a house that has moved over a century can be out by enough to matter. We measure every opening before ordering rather than assuming.

Primed doors cost less and let you paint any colour you like, but they need at least two top coats after fitting and they need it reasonably promptly — primer protects nothing on its own. Pre-finished doors arrive already finished and are done the moment they are hung. If you have a specific colour in mind, go primed; if you would rather not have a decorating job on the back of a fitting job, go pre-finished. Oak follows the same logic: unfinished lets you choose the tone, pre-finished is ready to use.

Sometimes it is a legal requirement rather than a choice. The usual triggers are a loft conversion, any three-storey house, and a door between an integral garage and the house. Houses in multiple occupation have their own rules and landlords are the most likely to be inspected on it. If your project falls into one of those, your building control officer or architect will confirm it — and it is worth asking before the doors are ordered rather than after. Our fire doors page covers what an FD30 door involves.

We can advise on and supply handles and ironmongery to complement your chosen doors. Alternatively, you're welcome to source your own handles and we'll fit them. Hinges and latches are typically included in the fitting cost.

    Fitting Day

For a typical job of 3–5 doors, fitting is usually completed in a single day. Larger projects and timescales will require longer, however we will always provide an accurate timescale for completion.

Please ensure clear access to each doorway. We advise keeping the landing/hall area clear to allow for a resting area for the doors and tools.

Usually not. If your existing linings are sound and reasonably square, a new door hangs straight into them and that keeps the cost down. Linings tend to need replacing when they are damaged, badly out of square, or when the door size is changing — for example fitting a fire door into an opening never sized for one. We will tell you which applies when we measure, and price it separately so you can see exactly what the difference is.

Measure the door itself rather than the opening — width, height and thickness — and take the width at more than one point, because a door that has been trimmed to fit is rarely square. If you are replacing like for like, a photograph of each doorway alongside the measurements is genuinely useful. That said, we measure everything ourselves before anything is ordered, so rough figures from you are plenty for us to quote from.

Yes. We remove the old doors and all the packaging as part of the job and dispose of them responsibly, so you are not left with a stack of doors in the garage. If you would rather keep any of them — original doors are often worth holding onto in a period property — just say and we will put them somewhere sensible instead.

Most doorways take a standard-sized door, but older properties — particularly Victorian and Edwardian homes — sometimes have unusual openings. We measure each doorway precisely and can advise on options during our site visit. We can also build custom doors to suit small cupboards or non-standard sizes. These are priced on a case-by-case basis.

    Coverage & Insurance

We cover North, East, South and West Yorkshire, Lincolnshire and the Humber as standard — see our Coverage Area page, or the page for your own area. We will travel beyond that for larger jobs, typically 5 or more doors.

Yes, Buchanans of Yorkshire Ltd is fully insured for public liability. Peace of mind that your property is protected while we work.
